Guide
How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?
The short answer
Profile corrections can show within days. Category and services changes typically settle in two to four weeks. Review and prominence work moves over one to three months. Competitive Map Pack positions in a busy city usually take three to six months of consistent work. Anyone promising top three in two weeks is describing an accident, not a plan.
What moves in days
- Verifying a profile — you can go from invisible to visible almost immediately.
- Fixing hours, phone number, website link and pin position.
- Resolving a suspension, once reinstated.
- Adding photos and completing empty profile sections.
What moves in two to four weeks
- A corrected primary category.
- A properly populated services list.
- Consistency fixes across major directories.
- New or rewritten service pages on your website being indexed and considered.
What moves in one to three months
- Review volume and velocity relative to competitors.
- Coverage across a wider radius rather than just near your address.
- Genuine local mentions and links starting to count.
- Overall prominence, which is cumulative by nature.
What makes it slower
- Dense competition: a dentist in central London faces a very different timeline to one in a market town.
- A brand-new profile with no history.
- Previous suspensions or a history of inconsistent details.
- A weak website with no relevant pages.
- Stop-start effort — three months of consistency beats one intense fortnight.
What makes it faster
- Foundations that were simply neglected rather than damaged — these fix quickly.
- An existing base of happy customers you can ask for reviews.
- A niche primary category with fewer credible competitors.
- Serving an area where competitors have incomplete profiles, which is more common than you would expect.
How to judge progress before rankings move
Rankings are a lagging indicator. Earlier signals: more search terms showing your profile, rising profile views and calls, more of your radius returning you at all, and improvement in the specific factors you were weakest on. If those are moving, position follows.
Frequently asked questions
- Can anyone guarantee a Map Pack position?
- No. Proximity alone makes guarantees impossible, because the result varies by where each customer is standing.
- Will results disappear if I stop?
- They decay. Reviews slow, competitors keep going, and details drift out of date. Local visibility needs maintenance rather than a one-off project.
- Is it faster in a small town than a city?
- Usually yes. Fewer credible competitors and less complete profiles mean the same work goes further.
