How to improve your local search visibility
The short answer
Work in order of impact, not order of comfort. Fix existence and accuracy first, relevance second, prominence third, and content and links last. Most local businesses get a bigger lift from correcting their categories and details than from months of publishing.
Why order matters more than effort
Local SEO checklists tend to list forty tasks of wildly different value as if they were equal. In practice a handful of items account for most of the movement, and doing them in the wrong order wastes months.
The sequence below is deliberately ruthless. Do not move to the next tier until the current one is genuinely done.
Tier 1 — Foundations (week one)
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile.
- Resolve duplicate or suspended listings.
- Set the correct location or service area, with an accurate pin.
- Set opening hours, including special hours, so you are not filtered out when open.
Tier 2 — Accuracy (week one to two)
- Make your name, address and phone number identical everywhere they appear.
- Correct the largest UK directories and your own social profiles.
- Remove or update old listings from previous premises or trading names.
- Make sure your website's contact details match your profile exactly.
Tier 3 — Relevance (week two to four)
- Set the single best primary category, then true secondary categories.
- Fill in the services or products list with real descriptions.
- Write a business description in customer language, not industry language.
- Create or improve one website page per main service, naming the areas you serve.
Tier 4 — Prominence (ongoing)
- Build a repeatable process for asking every satisfied customer for a review.
- Reply to every review, positive and negative.
- Add fresh photos regularly — real ones, of real work.
- Get listed in the trade bodies and local organisations relevant to you.
- Earn a few genuine local mentions: sponsorships, suppliers, local press, community groups.
Tier 5 — Content and depth (month two onwards)
Only once the foundations hold does content pay. Then write for the questions customers actually ask before buying, and for the specific services and areas you want more of. Two genuinely useful pages beat twenty thin ones.
How to know it is working
- Profile views, calls and direction requests rising in Google Business Profile.
- More of your area returning you in the top three.
- More search terms appearing in Search Console, not just more clicks on the same one.
- Enquiries that mention finding you on Google or Maps.
Common mistakes
- Publishing blog posts while the profile is unverified.
- Chasing citations in bulk on low-quality directories.
- Rewriting the website before knowing which searches matter.
- Stopping once results appear — local visibility decays without maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
- What single change makes the biggest difference?
- For businesses with an unverified or incomplete profile, completing it properly. For businesses with a solid profile, a consistent review process. It depends entirely on which tier you are stuck at.
- Do I need to blog to rank locally?
- No. Service pages that clearly cover what you do and where you do it matter far more than a blog for most local businesses.
- Can I do this myself?
- Tiers 1 to 3 are entirely doable in-house and worth doing yourself. Prominence and content are where most owners run out of time rather than ability.
